Sweet Music * Alexis Munoa

{Photos by Nicole Carman}

Did you make it to the Bijou Market? While I was there I couldn't help but fall in love with Alexis Munoa's voice. I am a huge jazz fan. Her rich smooth voice was enchanting. I asked her a few questions about her music and her is what she had to say.

Who are your inspirations?

Growing up my dad was a huge influence on me. He is very musical and I think he gave me that love for art in general. He is the one who introduced me to Billie Holiday. She is the reason I started to love jazz.

What inspired you to start singing and how long have you been singing?

I have been singing since I was 3. I'm an early riser and one day my mom found me on the patio singing a song to the sun. She wrote the words down. I should find them and give them a new tune! Singing can connect people and that is what I love about it. Words and music together are very powerful.
What is your favorite song to sing?

" I Love You for Sentimental Reasons" by William Best and Deek Watson I heard it first by Nat "King" Cole when I was 13. I promised myself that only my future husband would get to have that song. Last August we danced to it at our wedding.

Find of The Week * Preparedness Seeds

As anyone from Utah knows we are a group of preparedness people. One thing I have thought about before was if you happen to have a situation where you run out of your food storage then what do you do. Even if we wanted to plant a garden the seeds would run out because most of them are hybrid which means you cannot harvest the seeds from the fruits/veggies. A few weeks ago I saw these cans of Preparedness Seeds at the Provo Farmers Market. They are non-hybrid long term storage seeds. They also happen to be non-GMO seeds. You could survive for years on this kind of food storage.

One Great Recipes * Peach Blueberry Cobbler

{photos by Laura Barnett}

Many of my family's favorite recipes come from Martha Stewart's Everyday Food Magazine, which is where we found this incredibly delicious peach blueberry cobbler recipe. It's a perfect summer treat; especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.Happy Baking!

Peach Blueberry Cobbler

Crumb Topping
  • 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 c. packed light-brown sugar
  • 3/4 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 c. (2 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces

No 1 In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt.
Using your hands, a pastry blender, or two forks, work in butter until
mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Squeeze to form large clumps.

No. 2 Cover with plastic wrap or lid; freeze at least 30 minutes before using.

While you wait for your topping to get cold, you can start on the filling.

Filling
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 cans (15 oz. each) sliced peaches in light syrup, drained or use fresh peeled peaches
  • 2 TBSP fresh lemon juice
  • 1 lb. frozen blueberries

No.1 Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt.
Fold in peaches, lemon juice and frozen blueberries {or fresh if you have them}.

No.2
Divide evenly between six 6oz ramekins or custard cups.
{or you can bake it all in one big pan, like a 9x13"- it may just need a little longer to cook}

No.3 Sprinkle with crumble topping; enough to cover the entire top.

No.4 Place ramekins on a cookie sheet (in case the fruit boils over) and bake until the top is golden and the fruit mixture is thick and bubbling; about 40 minutes.
Check it around 30 minutes to make sure
the tops aren't getting too dark. Depending on your oven it may be done before 40 minutes is up.

Enjoy!

One of my favorite book series to read as a family is The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. It is based on the adventures of the Alden children Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny. Fun for younger children as well as older children. I remember my mom reading The Boxcar Children to us when I was young and having her finish it one afternoon. We are on book #3 The Yellow House Mystery. There are 19 books in the original series that were written in the 1940's & 50's. It's a perfect rainy summer day read with your children.

Sweet Things to do in The Valley * Fun Hikes for the Kids

Our favorite thing to do as a family in Utah is explore the state’s beautiful outdoors. Since my two children are under the age of three we can't do anything too extreme and have to make sure areas are kid friendly. I am big on regular "unstructured play in nature." Studies show that children are smarter, more cooperative, happier and healthier when they have frequent opportunities for free and unstructured play outdoors. It gives them the chance to explore, dream, pretend, experiment and come to their own conclusions at their own pace. If you would like to read more studies dedicated to this movement and a plethora of ideas to do as a family I highly suggest Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv.

The following are "tested and approved" by my girls and are our top three favorite places in Utah for unstructured play:

No.1 Yellow Fork www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/yellow-fork-rose-canyon.html

Yellow Fork is hidden in Herriman and is a surprisingly nice trail in the Oquirrh Mountain foothills at Rose Canyon. We actually refer to it as our "Secret Spot" but I guess it will no longer be a secret! In the summer I love this trail even more because most of it is nicely shaded and it is usually about 5 to 10 degrees cooler. It is a beautiful drive to the entrance of the trail. This is where we go when we have a few grumpy days in a row!

No.2 American Fork Canyon www.hikinginutah.com/canyon-nature.htm

Everyone knows about this place but did you know they have a nature trail just for kids? Along the trail are different markers with numbers on them that go along with a corresponding handout made for young nature explorers. It teaches them all about different types of leaves, plants and animals. As soon as fall begins to show its colors, head up there as fast as you can--it is stunning!

No.3 River Front Park www.sjc.utah.gov/leisureservices/parks-riverfrontpark.asp

This is a beautiful park hidden behind a neighborhood in South Jordan; it also is along the Jordan River Parkway. There are two fishing lakes, a bat house down the trail and large fields in which to play. The girls and I have spotted some really awesome wildlife I don't think we’ve seen anywhere else in Utah. The fishing ponds are surrounded by beautiful plants and this is a must-see place!

I could go on and on with my list. I would love to learn about even more local kid-friendly nature areas so please share! The girls and I also host community "Nature Days" where everyone is welcome to come and have fun with us while enjoying nature!

I am also excited that I now get my milk in glass bottles from the milk man every week. I have signed up for Winder Farms delivery {one of our New Sweet Life Favorites in The Valley}. We haven't had it in years and I must tell you it does taste better. We noticed right away.

Happenin in The Valley * School's Out * Stay-cation Ideas

Although we home school year round, we do spend a lot less time on book work during the summer months. Most of the kids here in The Valley are out of school too, which means time for fun activities. We will have some great stay-cation ideas for you over the next couple of months. The UtahValley.org has a list of fun things to do all summer listed under their Family Attractions in Utah Valley section. One of our favorite stay-cation activities they have listed is Seven Peaks Water Park. We have been going for years and the kids love it! They are celebrating their 20th year in business. Did you know they have 16 water slides, hot tubs, a wave pool, a lazy river and a kid's area. They also offer swimming lessons in the morning. Right now their season passes are 50% off! Please note, you do have to pay for parking. Be sure to check the rules for Seven Peaks too, so you will be prepared to have a great time. Happy summer stay-cationing!

Sweet Crafty Creations * Father's Day Ideas

Father's Day is just around the corner, June 21st, and if you're anything like me it's hard to think of something new to get him year after year. A tie might seem like an over done option, but what if it was personalized? What if you made it? There's a great tutorial here from Purl Bee on how to make a tie. You can download and print out the pattern for free and the tutorial is easy to follow. You don't even need a sewing machine! Give it a try and surprise the Father's in your life with a handmade gift.
